TelExchange Operations Specialist JOB SUMMARY The basic purpose of the position is to operate the TelExchange including diagnosing and locating troubles, performing repair and maintenance, and restoring service for optimal customer satisfaction. The TelExchange Operations Specialist serves as a subject matter expert and a key point of contact with the Network Management Center (NMC) in managing technical problems through to resolution. Periodically the incumbent is required to install and perform testing a new terrestrial routes. The individual exercises independent judgment and usually works under minimal supervision. DUTIES AND RESPONSlBlLlTlES 1.Trouble Analysis, Diagnosis and Reporting �Receive, record and track reports of faults and troubles. �Identify and diagnose problems; evaluate whether they are service affecting, and establish priorities for resolution, especially when there are concurrent troubles. �Ensure proper organizational attention to the problem, escalation or corrective action. 2.Repair and Restoration. - Develop technical solutions to faults and troubles and implement solutions as appropriate, ensuring that service is restored on an optimum schedule. 3.Preventive Maintenance. - Working with the NMC, perform ongoing post event analysis to cable systems and equipment. Determine the correct course of corrective action before problem becomes service effecting. The incumbent will utilize the Network Management Systems, Operation Support Systems, and a multitude of software programs to support the analysis and technical solution 4.Installation. -Facilitate the installation of new and upgraded systems and equipment. Able to lift 50 lbs safely. Ability to work with hand tools. 5.Testing. - Verify that systems and equipment conform to specifications and customer requirements and that they are adequate to fully support the achievement of DMOQ and MOQ. MAJOR CHALLENGES: �Complexities and variances in service requests and requirements of customers, resulting in the need for dealing with a wide variety of problems and recommending a range of practical solutions; �Pressures generated from customer demands for rapid resolution of problems and restoration of service. �Pressures associated with start-up of a new systems, and upgrades. SCOPE AND FlNANClAL IMPACT Responsible for maintaining equipment with a capital value of in excess $ 10 million.. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS Education and Experience � High school diploma a minimum. Additional education desirable; e.g., continuing education in areas such as optical systems technology, design and engineering; power feed systems; IP technology; optical and transmission test equipment; and computer skills and applications.� At least 5 years' experience in the telecommunications industry. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to set priorities, recognize basic causes, and recommend problem solutions that meet the practical needs of the business � Good communication skills (both written and verbal)� Balanced interpersonal style; a team player able to work effectively with employees at all levels� Self-starter, able to take initiative and work with minimum direction in a fast-paced environment� Fully computer literate, with command of Microsoft Office software as well as technical and diagnostic programs and systems� May be required to work day, evening or night shifts, weekends and subject to call-in� SDH/SONET experience required from DS0 level to OC-192 and Lucent OLS, Ciena Corestream / Coredirector, Nortel TN16X / DX background preferred |
